A Future of Creativity

Why Creativity is (still) one of the most important skills for the future of our children.
Raising Confident Children in Times of Uncertainty
Our world is changing rapidly in both desirable and undesirable ways. We believe that fostering creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence in our children is more crucial than ever. It is also the key to raising a generation of individuals who can tackle uncertainty head on and who can lead under growing uncertainty, brittleness and anxiety. More than that, who can re-discover and nurture hope, collaboration despite differences, and who can chart a sustainable path to the 22nd century.
To empower our children with these essential skills, we, as caregivers, must first expand our own understanding. It’s not just about positive parenting, although that's a vital component. We need to evolve our parenting perspectives, adopt new strategies, and build more meaningful relationships. Only then can we effectively guide our children through the complexities of modern life.
Traditional education and parenting approaches often struggle to keep pace with rapid technological advancements. Many families grapple with concerns like screen time, cyberbullying, and the impacts of artificial intelligence in education. These challenges are real and require our attention, but they also present opportunities for learning and growth.
Despite these challenges, there is reason for optimism. We already possess the most powerful tools: our hearts and minds. By embracing the transformative power of creativity, we can navigate these complexities together. Let’s explore how creativity can shape a brighter future.
Cognitive and Affective Skills Are Inseparable
Neuroscience reveals fascinating insights into how our brains weave together intellect and emotions. At Raising Lila, we focus on this integration because understanding how empathy and emotions influence learning is crucial. This synergy between cognitive and emotional skills not only enhances creativity but also helps become aware of cognitive biases, shaping how we perceive and interact with the world.
Why is that relevant for parenting? Among other reasons, realizing that big, complex skills like creativity and critical thinking aren’t purely the work of reason and intellect, but they weave together cognitive and affective skills, imagination, and emotional insights. Children who learn to suppress or lack opportunities to manage their emotions often grow up with less healthy forms of creative expression, lower self-esteem, and diminished self-confidence. On the other hand, a balanced development of intellectual and emotional faculties forms the foundation for these higher order capabilities.
Creativity Fuels Critical Thinking Fuels Creativity
Creativity and critical thinking are interdependent. Encouraging children to dream up bold ideas and then critically evaluate and refine them builds metacognition. This process teaches them to reflect on their own learning and understand diverse perspectives. Simultaneously, emotional awareness helps children connect with others and enhances their creative processes. This interconnected dance of skills lays the groundwork for lifelong success.
Guides, Mentors & Guardians
Let’s face it: we already agree that the days of saying “because I said so” are long gone. Today’s kids are savvy and curious, and they need role models who can guide them through modern challenges, so they can prepare for future ones, not get spooked by the ghosts of ancient success. When parents and educators invest in understanding creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence, they’re better equipped to nurture these traits in children. Imagine transforming after-school meltdowns into teachable moments where kids learn to articulate their feelings and think through solutions. Or turning kitchen disasters into culinary adventures that spark innovation and problem-solving.
Even more consequential, imagine if we can find ways to prevent our children from falling prey to misinformation, fake news, cult leaders, and other threats of our present and future days. On top of that, imagine a future where our children can stand up and stand out when challenged by artificial intelligence or when collaborating to solve global problems.
As a parent, I’ve always wanted my children to have more than just a safe and healthy upbringing, I want them to thrive emotionally and intellectually. Watching my son grow, I realized that although there are far more resources to support such holistic development today than a decade ago, there’s still a great deal of misconception around these critical cognitive and affective skills. And, the number of threats and challenges is growing.
Raising Lila
That is why I decided to create Raising Lila, a series of books that blend engaging stories with valuable lessons on creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence inspired by the latest scientific developments. My goal is to make learning these skills fun and fulfilling for both children and caregivers.
The "Lila and the Extraordinary Pinwheel" book series is where it all begins. These stories are meant to captivate young minds while subtly teaching them about the wonders of creative thinking and progressively helping them learn how to manage their own creative processes and outlets. Through Lila's adventures, children see these skills in action, and parents get handy tips to reinforce them at home. Plus, who doesn’t love a good bedtime story that also happens to be a mini-masterclass in life skills?
It is a Journey
Investing in our knowledge about creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence isn’t just about helping our kids, it’s about transforming ourselves into the best guides we can be. It’s about becoming mentors and guardians of the positive environments that nurture great human beings.
Join Lila on her adventures and unlock a world filled with endless possibilities.
